life under control - w2d4

week2 day 3 - no longer controlled by sin
You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. (Romans 8:9-11 ESV)
Here Paul lays out that every Christian has the Spirit. This is so clear here that he says if you do not have the Spirit you are not saved as the Spirit is necessary for everlasting life. If you have been born-again, then you have the Spirit. If you have the Spirit then you can break free from sin's bondage over your mind. In general, sin has no dominion over us, but we all have our own personal sins that we keep safe from the light either knowingly or not. Once we are aware, we can break free through the empowerment of the Spirit.
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. (Galatians 6:7-8 ESV)
How do we sow to the Spirit? How do we sow and reap anything? If you exercise a healthy lifestyle (physically or spiritually), you will reap a healthy life.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-21 ESV)
How do we avoid "quenching the Spirit"? I have found that usually Pauline epistles explain ambiguous verses directly preceding or following the command. In either case, following the surrounding Scripture is good for our hearts and souls.

Rejoice always. Even when you don't know how you'll pay your bills.

Pray without ceasing.

Give thanks in all circumstances.

Do not despise prophecies but test them all and only hold onto the good ones.

Following these commands it will be difficult for sin to reign in me. Sin and God cannot coexist. Sin and an unrepentant heart quench the Spirit. Active and welcomed sin quenches the Spirit. By encouraging the above disciplines in my own life I will be sure to not quench the Spirit.

Won't Let Satan Blow It Out
